Attorney Kester K. So Named a "2013 Leader in the Law" By Michigan Lawyers Weekly

Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that Attorney Kester K. So has been named a "2013 Leader in the Law" by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

So is a Deputy CEO of the Firm and a member of the Management Group and specializes in municipal finance, where he serves as bond counsel or underwriter's counsel on a wide variety of bond issues, including, but not limited to, bonds for hospitals and health care, public power, higher education, transportation, unemployment insurance, tax increment financing, state revolving fund, environmental, school bond loan fund, State and local building authorities, airports, water and sewer, solid waste disposal and industrial and economic development projects. The recent $3 billion unemployment insurance transactions on which So and the firm served as co-bond counsel was recently named the National and Midwest Regional Deals of the Year by the nationally recognized publication, The Bond Buyer.

So is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Ingham County Bar Association, and the National Association of Bond Lawyers. He serves on the Council of the Public Corporation Law Section and is a past chairperson. He is a former editor and a current contributor to the Public Corporation Law Quarterly, and regularly contributes to the Michigan Municipal League's Municipal Briefs. He was also appointed by the Michigan Governor to the Council on Labor and Economic Growth and its successor, the Talent Investment Board, and is a Trustee to the United States Law Firm Group. So is listed in Best Lawyers in America in four categories, including Municipal and Public Finance Law, and was recently elected one of eleven Fellows nationwide to the American College of Bond Counsel. So received his A.B. with high distinction from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

Each year, Michigan Lawyers Weekly selects 25-30 lawyers to honor as "Leaders in the Law." "Leaders in the Law" are lawyers who exemplify the noble tradition of the legal profession, are passionate and active on behalf of clients and the community, have a record of success in the legal profession, and have a record of achievements that displays a strength of character and ability to be a leader in the Michigan legal community. The "2013 Leaders in the Law" were honored at an annual luncheon and awards celebration on March 21, 2013 at the Troy Marriott.

 

Publicom Wins Six National Awards for Service Industry Advertising

Publicom Inc., a full-service marketing communications firm, has won six national creative awards in the 10th Annual Service Industry Advertising Awards (SIAA) competition. The winning entries were developed for five clients: First Step, Gateway Community Services, Lifestyle Lift, McLaren Health Care and Peppermint Creek Theater Company.

The national awards included the following:

  • Brochure – "Peaceful Families, Safe Communities," First Step, Plymouth
  • Advertising campaign – "Homeless Labels," Gateway Community Services, Lansing
  • Direct mail – "Debby Boone" Lifestyle Lift, Troy
  • TV advertising campaign – "Strong Communities & More," McLaren Health Care, Flint
  • Logo – McLaren Health Care, Flint
  • Logo – Peppermint Creek Theater Company, Lansing

Publicom's submissions were up against nearly 2,000 entries. The SIAA is the only competition to specifically recognize advertising excellence for organizations in the service industry. Carol Zimmer to Present at Second Wind Conference

Carol Zimmer CMD, President of ZimmerFish, in East Lansing, will present "Luring Clients with Data" at YA2 – Your Agency Empowered, a Second Wind conference in Orlando, Fla.

This year's conference will address key marketing industry trends that will enable agencies to empower their businesses in 2013 and beyond. Second Wind is a national organization of marketing and advertising agencies.

ZimmerFish, an East Lansing marketing and communication firm, has partnered with major entities to provide marketing research, strategic planning and multi-media communication campaigns since 1994. In the fall of 2012, ZimmerFish partnered with Sparrow Health System to co-present a lecture entitled, "Power of Data" to the Society of Healthcare Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD) in Philadelphia, PA.

   

Superior Asphalt to Open Lansing Facility

Grand Rapids-based Superior Asphalt will open its newest manufacturing facility, Lansing Asphalt in mid April. It will be the third asphalt manufacturing facility in the Lansing area, but the very first to be Michigan-owned and operated.

The $6 million plant located at 3880 S. Canal Road in Delta Township will be capable of manufacturing 400 tons of asphalt per hour. Owner Jeff Kresnak hopes to employ 15 to 20 people in the first year and 50 to 100 within the next five. Kresnak hopes to have found a market niche with Lansing Asphalt.

"Municipalities are going to find us a good option when they send projects out for bid. We have experienced personnel and credentials to handle any asphalt project."

   

MLBA Welcomes New Member Relations Coordinator

The Michigan Licensed Beverage Association (MLBA) is happy to announce the hiring of Brittany Mackey as Member Relations Coordinator.

"Bringing Brittany on board will create a more direct focus on what is most important to our association, and that's our members," says MLBA Executive Director Scott Ellis.

Mackey is from Pleasant Lake, Mich., roughly 20 minutes northeast of Jackson, where she lives with her husband Alex. A recent graduate of Western Michigan University, she received a bachelor of arts in public relations with a minor in event planning.

At the MLBA, Mackey will be working with staff and board members to plan board meetings, MLBA member events and will be responsible for membership recruitment and retention. She is currently planning the MLBA Spring Conference and Lobby day for May 6 and 7.

"My main focus is on our members and their needs," says Mackey. "I think both new and returning members are going to be very happy with the changes being made."
